Esteban Celemín - Últimas Huellas "Parcelas" Albillo Real - Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León - 2023
The Best White Wine of the Year: A Masterwork of Power and Finesse
Awarded a staggering 98 points and named the "Best White Wine of the Year" by renowned critic Tim Atkin, Últimas Huellas "Parcelas" is a definitive expression of the Albillo Real grape. This serious white wine is the result of blending fruit from four minuscule plots on the east side of the Toro region, crafted to rival the finest white wines in the world. It beautifully captures a unique terroir, offering a paradox of tropical exuberance balanced by bone-dry precision and elegant salinity.
Tasting Profile
-
Aroma: An exuberant and complex bouquet featuring white flowers, waxy notes, and ginger, layered with pineapple syrup and mango skin.
-
Palate: Bone dry with vibrant acidity, the palate reveals sophisticated notes of waxy lemon peel and lemongrass.
-
Texture: Texture is the hallmark of this wine, combining the classical glyceric exuberance of the variety with a sapid (sápido) nuance and the freshness of the 2023 vintage.
-
Finish: Long and persistent, accented by an elegant salinity and a touch of reduction that adds to its serious character.
Viticulture & Craftsmanship
-
Terroir: Sourced from four heritage parcels at 680 meters elevation. The soils feature a clay sub-soil and a surface of sand mixed with small pebbles (galets) deposited by the Duero river, providing natural thermo-regulation and drainage.
-
The Vines: A rare collection of old vines, with one vineyard aged 45+ years and the remaining parcels exceeding 100 years in age.
-
Vintage: A classical year where harvest-time rain allowed for continued photosynthesis and cooler temperatures, resulting in a superb balance between sugar, acidity, and flavor.
-
Elaboration: A highly artisanal process including hand-harvesting, foot-trodding, and the use of a manual basket vertical press.
-
Fermentation & Aging: Fermented with natural indigenous yeasts in two 300L French oak barrels and matured for 12 months in used French oak.
