Producer details
Except for the riserva, Valdicava's wines are blended from various vineyards and plots to achieve the desired characteristics. This is generally the case with almost all Brunellos. All the grapes for the riserva, however, are sourced from a single vineyard. The wine and the vineyard are named after the Madonna del Piano church located on the property. The Madonna del Piano Riserva was the first single vineyard Cru Brunello ever produced. In fact, until 1994 single vineyard labeling was prohibited by DOCG Brunello standards. Only mature (35 - 40 year old) vines are used to make the riserva. Since Sangiovese vines must be replaced about every 40 years new vines are planted in plots that will eventually replace the old ones that will get torn out. Younger plots in the rotation are used in the other wines until they are mature enough for the riserva.

Aging
In oak barrels.

Rating
96 points – James Suckling An impressively structured wine. Aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets. Full body with velvety, rich tannins. Very tannic and powerful, yet the tannins are polished and pretty. Layers of everything here. Give this another three to four years before opening.

96 points - Robert Parker The Wine Advocate The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is another super-finessed wine. Subtle floral notes meld into expressive red berries in a sumptuous Brunello that captures the essence of the vintage. The style is rich and deeply textured, but the 2007, as outstanding as it is, needs at least a few more years in bottle. Once again, finesse rules the day. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.
